The growers attempted to break the strike by hiring scab laborers, many of them young children. The strikers picketed the vineyards, waving signs and calling out to the workers in the fields to join them. Many did. As the strike continued, the growers began harassing the pickets by driving tractors at high speeds close to their lines. When the growers obtained a court injunction against the picketing, the strikers responded by holding religious services (not pickets) in the fields.
