Mileston, MS: August 1, 1964. Freedom School, Mileston. Mississippi Summer Project, 1964. Freedom school student, Edie Carthen, learning to type. Years later Carthen became mayor of nearby Tchula. His economic development programs so challenged local whites that he was framed on a murder charge, jailed, and later released after a nationwide protest.
