Mileston, MS: June 1, 1964. Freedom Summer Volunteers: Summer of 1964, Students from Mileston Freedom School. Tall man, center, is Abe Osheroff, carpenter from Venice California, and veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, who built the community center. White woman, front row, is Edie Black, summer volunteer teacher from Smith College. These kids had never imagined friendship with a white person. It changed their sense of life's possibilities.
